The first time someone I loved died, it was devastating. I remember the call at school from my mother, “Poppy is very sick. We’re going to Florida.” The room seemed to swirl around me. In this small town, in that large playground covered with sand and littered with old toys I have never heard “Strawberry Wine” the way I did in 2001 by the little school on Elm Street, nor flown as I did then off the swing set, my hair in my face. I’m sorry, so sorry I think this is the death of me. My chest is compressed with tears, fears, hate and loneliness. The days stretch before me, long and unending. I can’t meet anyone’s standards. Everyone has certain songs they really hate. For me, it’s anything by Neil Diamond, “Dust in the Wind” and that one Green Day song. Even if you don’t know what it’s called, everyone knows the song. thank you so much for the favorite of Star Swallower!

I read your journal about chasing your dream....HELL YES!!! If you took any lesson away from the story in Star Swallower is to not let things stop you from going for it!! My mentor, Suzanne, who inspired the poem, passed away last year with boxes of manuscripts, poetry, short stories--none of it published, because she had a fear of rejection and never submitted. Her writing is some of the best I've ever seen and it is a tragedy.

I went after my dream a few years ago...I quit my career job and started writing full-time, doing whatever kind of work I needed to do to pay the bills. It's been glorious!!!
